After a twenty year hiatus, the York Winterguard won gold at their first competition. The competition was located at Cumberland High School on the twenty-first of January. The winterguard retired its program twenty years ago and has been reinstated as of this year. Co-Captain Madison Harsey said, “Bringing Winterguard back after being hidden for so long gives us a chance to show ourselves again and prove that it didn’t go away because of it being a failure, it went down because no one wanted to try it out. And I’m really happy that we got to bring it back to life and move people’s hearts in a way that makes them inspired to look deeper”. The Winterguard performed to the song “Elastic Heart” sung by Sia. The members of the guard did many different types of tosses on rifle, saber, and flag. Winterguard is a combination of dance and equipment performance. The head coach Chris Opalka said, “My favorite part of coaching all together is seeing my students grow not only in the passion for the sport but in their friendships as well and this season was no different”. Chris helped each of the members of the guard grow their skills and it helped the whole group qualify for Atlantic Indoor Association championships.
