Take Flight Picnic

To celebrate the senior class’s future plans, Senior Class Council or SCC members arranged a “Take Flight Picnic.” The picnic was held on National Decision Day, which was May 1st, 2024. To include all students regardless of their chosen paths such as a four-year college, community college, or joining the workforce, SCC members named the event “Take Flight.”

The picnic was held on Bailey Field before the school day began. Students were able to bring blankets and watch the sunrise, surrounded by all their classmates for one of the last times. SCC planned this picnic at the beginning of the year, shortly after Senior Sunrise, an annual celebration for the first day of school, was rained out. The Senior Class Historian, Megan Dahn, said, “Planning this picnic amongst all of the other upcoming events was difficult, but we were very thankful for the second opportunity at a sunrise celebration for the rest of our classmates.” SCC decorated the picnic with a poster and hanging paper airplanes, along with a photo frame for students to take pictures in. The Senior Class Secretary, Elizabeth Poitras, who made both the poster and photo frame said, “I love making the posters and frames for our events because it gives our classmates a chance to capture memories they will have for the rest of their lives”. Both SCC and senior Yearbook staff members were also taking photos with both their cellphones and digital cameras to capture the event for everyone attending.

During the picnic, students were encouraged to wear gear from the college they plan on attending in the fall or the workplace they plan on working for. Senior Julia Ellars, who plans on attending Christopher Newport University in the fall, said, “Seeing where everyone is going to end up in the future was a bittersweet moment. The future is so exciting, but leaving all our friends and programs we have grown up around is sad.” Between the “Take Flight Picnic” and the decision page, seniors were able to announce where they were going to their classmates. The decision page was an Instagram page run by the SCC Historian, where students could submit their future plans and have them posted for their classmates to view. Senior Noah Hensley said, “Posting on the senior decision page and the picnic were fun ways for me to celebrate that I was committed to go run in college.”

Between the formal senior events such as Senior Breakfast and Prom, having a simple event with food donations enabled the students to relax among their fellow classmates. The picnic proved to be a successful event, as many seniors stopped by for a quick picture and breakfast before heading to class.
