York High School Track and Field Team Strides Towards Regionals

The York High School track team of 2022 is closing in on the VHSL 3A Regional meet at Churchland High School in late May, with several athletes contesting spots for the VHSL 3A State Championship meet at Liberty University in early June.

York athletes such as Danielle Hollington (Fr.), Grace Katzer (So.), and Ciarra Moore (Jr.) are challenging for regional champion spots in several events and are looking to secure state meet qualifying times at the Highland Spring Invitational on May 14th, the Bay Rivers District Meet on May 17th, and at the VHSL 3A Regional meet on May 20th and 21st. Hollington and Moore have already successfully made state qualifying standards in the 400m and Long Jump/Triple Jump respectively, with Moore competing at the Adidas Outdoor National Meet on June 18 for her field events.

Coach Charles Brown said, “We have a real chance at pushing for those top spots at regionals” at a pre-practice meeting. As the sprinting coach for the track team, with many years of experience in both competing and coaching, his optimism for the group of girls to take several events and qualify for the state meet is a sign of success.

Hollington and Moore are two of the fastest sprinters on the team, with Hollington running a 27.42s 200m race and 1:00.42s 400m race. Moore contested at meets with a 26.59s 200m, 17-1ft Long Jump, and a 35-6ft Triple Jump. While both have already qualified in individual events, their next goal is to take as many teammates as possible with them to states by qualifying in the 4x100m and 4x400m relay races at regionals.

Coach Thomas Tate said, “Grace [Katzer] is an amazing runner and she has so much potential.” Katzer’s attempts for the school record in the 3200m, the 1600m and the 800m highlight her abilities and spotlight her blossoming running career, considering she only started track two years ago. This was proven when Grace Katzer (So.) placed in the top five at the Highland Springs Invitational on May 14th, qualifying for the State Championship meet and breaking the school record in the 800m run with a time of 2:22.

At regionals, Giuliana Verry (Jr.) became the Class 3 Region Pole Vault champion. The girls 4x800m team, the girls 4x400m team, and the boys 4x400m team placed 4th in their respective competitions and have all qualified for the Class 3 State Championship.
