York High School Choir Holds Spring Concert

The York Middle School Choir and York High School choirs came together on Wednesday, May 11th in the John P. Wornum Auditorium to perform their final concert of the year.

Under the direction of Lisa Spruill, the middle school choir performed songs such as “Homeward Bound” and “Rhythm of Life” along with the High Frequency choir. Each song had its own introduction either by Spruill or a student. Chamber choir and Tres Jolie also came together with High Frequency and the middle school choir to sing the song “A Million Dreams.”

Daniel Brewster, a senior in Chamber choir said, “The Greatest Showman has some of my favorite music in it, so I guess it was just really cool to perform it. To be honest, I thought two soloists singing the melody together would not work out at first, especially because a lot of the soloists had not sung together, but it all worked out. It was pretty cool singing a song like that with everyone on stage together. I think it made a great opening song.”

Tres Jolie, one of the advanced choirs, performed “Lullaby of Birdland” and “She Used to Be Mine.” They also joined with Chamber and sang two songs: “Sing me to Heaven” and “Voice on the Wind.” Both of those songs were sung at the choir’s assessment in March.

Chamber was the last group to perform two songs: “The Hymn of Acxiom” and “The Cuckoo.” The seniors who were in Chamber choir during their sophomore year advocated singing the “Hymn Of Acxiom” since they were unable to perform the song back in 2020.

Jay Parcell, a senior in chamber and a member of the audience, said, “Hymn of Acxiom probably had to be my favorite song that the choir performed. The way all the voices blended together during the harmonies made me feel floaty. I also just have a general adoration for that song.”

Finally, the night ended with a distribution of awards and superlatives as well as a final song called “Stand in the Light,” which was performed by the seniors in each choir.
