York High School competition cheer teams placed second at the last Bay River District competition. On their last district competition at Lafayette High School on October 16th, 2021, the girls performed a zero-deduction routine and went on to place second.
Senior Savana McLaughlin said, “It felt so amazing to receive second after almost not having a season and feeling like the underdogs; all of our hard work paid off and I felt such relief in placing so high.”
The team went against 7 other teams including Grafton, Jamestown, Lafayette, Poquoson, New Kent, Tabb, and Warhill. The girls came in second below Lafayette. Kennedy Hofstra (Sr.), a member of the team since her freshman year, said, “It still felt like a great accomplishment, considering what we went through as a team.”
For the first 3 weeks of their season, they had Covid-19 cases and quarantined members throughout the team and even missed the first competition on September 11th, 2021, but the team finished the regular season with second place.
The competition was the highest they placed all season. They placed third at their first competition and ended with fourth at regionals. Senior Lauren Sechriest received First Team All-Region and First Team All-State. Senior Cejae Farris and sophomore Kadynce Washington received Second Team All-Region.
Coach Porsha Valliant, her first year as a York High coach, will return to lead the team in future seasons. Both Farris and Grey will continue college cheer careers, Grey at CNU and Farris at JMU.
