The girls basketball team began the 2021-2022 season with varying degrees of varsity basketball experience. The team only lost one senior during the 2020-2021 season.
The team was led by senior captains Becca Allen, Ashley Hunt (Jr.), Ellen Jones, and Allison Runnels. The team faced many injuries such as back injuries and tight muscles.
Some major wins for the Falcons included their win against rival school Tabb when the game winning shot was made in the last ten seconds, making the final score 36-35. Other notable wins for the Falcons included their wins against Jamestown (51-47 and 42-37) and their win against Bruton (40-39). Both of these games were very tight games for the Falcons.
The Bruton win was the Falcons’ Coach Cyrous Bahgeri’s 100th career win.
Linsey Taskey (Jr.) said, “I loved the friendship and family nature of the team and the coaches.” Taskey said that her favorite game was the win against Bruton because “it was an emotional and fun game because there were lots of friends on the opposing team.” This game came down to the very end, as the Falcons only won by one point (40-39).
The Falcons were led by Ashley Hunt (Jr.), who had 22 points and 7 rebounds. Zyiah Williams (Sr.) said, “The season would not have been fun if we did not have to learn to fight through adversity.”
Williams said that the win against Tabb was her favorite because “it was the first time in the season that we put all of our losses behind us and just played our hardest.” In this game, the Falcons were led by Allison Runnels (Sr.), who had a
double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, and the game-winning shot came from Briana Whittaker, (So.) who had 7 points for the Falcons. The 2021-2022 basketball season was the end of an era for the York Basketball team, as they graduated six seniors. This was also the last season for Head Coach Bahgeri as he resigned in order to be with his daughter Lakelyn Bahgeri who plays basketball at Tabb Middle School.
