York Defeats Poquoson

Unranked York Softball Beats No. 15 Poquoson in last Wednesday’s matchup

Both York and Poquoson softball teams have been battling for wins. During the last matchup, which was the first game of the season for both teams, it was a fight to the very end of the game where Poquoson came out on top winning 2-1 after a hit in the bottom of the 7th inning that plated two runs.

Poquoson has seemed to be a team that was on the rise after its win against Grafton, who beat York. Last Wednesday’s games proved that York is not a team to count out.

The game was a pitching duel through 5 innings until York came to bat and capitalized on an error by Poquoson. Lacy Parrish (Sr.), who led off the inning, hit an infield popup that Poquoson did not make a play on, which landed Parrish on first base. Morgan Hunter (Jr.) was up next. Hunter laid down a bunt that advanced Parrish to 2nd base and put her in scoring position for Michaela Brown (Sr.) to hit her in. Brown successfully hit a single that scored Parrish, putting York up 1-0.

Poquoson was not ready to give up yet. In the top of the 6th inning, Poquoson successfully answered back and tied the game 1-1 with the help of Sela Pickford (Jr.) and Brooklyn Arneault (So.). Pickford successfully got on base; then, Arneault was able to hit her in with a double.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, Aubrey Stephan (Sr.) led the inning off with a double, placing York in the perfect position to take the lead. Sarah Witt (Fr.) came to bat to hit another double which scored Stephan, putting York on top 2-1. Stephan said, “It felt good being able to help my team win, especially because we have worked so hard.”

In the top of the 7th inning, Poquoson was in a perfect position to answer back again when they led the inning off with a double. York prevailed playing shut down defense. Witt gained the win, pitching a whole game. Witt stated, “It felt really good pitching that game because of how good and close of a game it was.” She stated that what helped her succeed most during the game was “knowing that I had the defense behind me and that the team was there to pick each other up the whole time.”

After York defeated Poquoson after losing the first game of the season against them, assistant coach Hannah Winfree said, “Beating a team that has long been a rival of ours, was incredible. We worked as we were a well-oiled machine, and nothing could stop us. To say I am proud of our hard work is an understatement. Today we showed them our game and nothing less. Winning is always great, but beating a rival team is even better.”

Both York and Poquoson have a long rest of the season ahead of them. Both teams are strong enough to go deep into the playoffs.
