Students in science classes completed their brackets for March Mammal Madness and waited to see their choices. The 3-seed Wolverine took down the 1-seed Okapi in the final round of March Mammal Madness (MMM), crowning it champion. Winners who correctly predicted the victory included teacher Amy Holtschneider and student Abby Kern.
The Wolverine sustained injuries from its previous battles against the Golden Eagle and Emperor Penguin, as it battled the Okapi in the Ephemeral Wetlands. Despite this, the Wolverine landed several slashes to the Okapi’s flank and the Okapi fled the field of battle, resulting in a Wolverine win.
3-seed winners like the Wolverine are rare in MMM, so the upset caused a whirlwind of emotions from teachers and students participating in this year’s tournament.
Some participants expressed incredulity at the results. “This is a classic example of the good guy not finishing first,“ complained science teacher Amber Lamonte, who had invested in the otter winning early on.
Meanwhile, other participants were thrilled by the Wolverine’s win. “We knew from the start it was going be the Wolverine all the way,“ stated science teacher and Wolverine fan Amy Holtschneider.
Competition was fierce, as the winner was given a free 100 test grade along with his/her name on the golden coated MMM trophy. Class losers are forced to dress up as animals at school for an entire day.
“Personally, the Wolverine winning was the greatest thing that happened in my high school career,” stated student winner Abby Kern (Sr.).
Students like Anna Zadel and Morgan Hatfield dressed as animals after their loss.
