The varsity boys and girls tennis teams had their senior nights on their last home games to celebrate the seniors and their contributions to the teams. The boys’ senior night was a match against Bruton on Thursday, April 27th, 2023. The girls’ senior night was a match against Grafton on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023.
The boys team seniors are Nick Valerio and Elijah Trott and both boys have been a part of the York High varsity boys tennis team for 2 years. The boys celebrated senior night with Coach Justin Keyes. This was Keyes’ 19th senior celebration as head coach.
Senior Nick Valerio plans to continue playing tennis at Virginia Commonwealth University club tennis with his older brother and York High varsity boys’ tennis alumni, Nathan Valerio. He chooses to continue playing because “ever since I started playing tennis in my junior year, it’s been something I truly love playing.”
The girls celebrated seniors Kendall Abercrombie, 1st year player Mary Browning, 3rd year player Morgan Hatfield, 3rd year player Chelsea Spivey, 4th year player Emma Schlosser, and Betsy Walsh, 4th year player. The non-seniors on the team made posters and personalized gift baskets for each of the girls. Coach Stephen Fisher made sure that all the seniors got the opportunity to play in singles or doubles, regardless of their rankings.
Senior Morgan Hatfield said her favorite memory of being on the team was the ice cream run. She said, “It’s actually very fun and a great bonding experience.” The girls tennis team has a yearly tradition of doing an ice cream run, which is a run from the York High Tennis Courts to Ben & Jerry’s.
Since finishing their last regular season games, both teams advanced to play in the Region 3A team tournament.
