Softball Wins District Semifinals

The district semifinals game for York Softball was held after school on May 16th, 2023. The girls ended with a 6-3 win against Poquoson. The district tournament takes the top 4 teams in the district to compete for a trophy. The teams competing included York, Poquoson, Grafton, and New Kent. York advanced to play New Kent on Thursday, May 18th, 2023.

Senior Morgan Hunter said, “The game was intense the whole way through. I was nervous the whole time, but the feeling of winning was the greatest feeling ever.”

Poquoson is York’s biggest competitor. In the regular season, York was run ruled by Poquoson in the early season. The last game of York’s season, the team beat Poquoson 4-2. The only other team to beat Poquoson this year was Grafton with the score of 4-3.

Ashtyn Howe (Jr.) said, “We have come together as a team from being run ruled to beating out our biggest competition.”

The regular season ended with a record of 14-6 for the Falcons. The girls headed to New Kent to play in the District Championship on Thursday. The team’s first playoff game was Friday, May 26th, 2023 against Tabb High School. The falcons ended the first regional playoff game with a 10-0 win over Tabb. The girls then went to play New Kent again in the regional championship, the ending score was 2-3 with New Kent taking the championship. Junior Taylor Floyd said, “We fought well and performed well. We were up for the longest time and gave 110% until the very end. I could not be prouder of each and every girl.” The Falcons headed to states for the first time in 9 years.

The Falcons played Brentsville for the states playoff on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. The girls had a 15-3 win over Brentsville, securing their spot in the state semifinals for the first time since 1995. The Falcons headed to Spotsylvania to play Cave Spring in the semifinals.
