The York Boys Varsity Soccer program ended its 5 game drought at Bruton High school on Tuesday, May 10th. Deep in The Pit, York Boys soccer held Bruton and earned a 2-0 win.
The York boys varsity soccer team was in desperate need of a win before the regional playoffs. Having won four of their first six games, the team was confident coming into the long stretch of games with upwards of two games a week, yet they lost all of their next five games.
The boys needed a confidence-booster and team meeting before their next big away match at Bruton High School. Head coach Ascencion Gomez III gave the team an inspiring speech.
“The game started out rough and was an uphill battle, but we played hard all game and it really paid off in the end,” said senior Gabe Brainard following the much needed win.
The match’s deciding goals came late in the second half from Brainard (Sr.), unassisted, and Joel Mahaffy (Sr.), assisted by Jett Tornatore (Jr.). Brainard’s goal gave him his second goal of the season while Mahaffy’s goal gave him his impressive eleventh goal of the season.
“It felt good and refreshing to win after losing 5 games in a row. We also started playing better as a team after the win,” said Justin Yi (Sr.).
Looking to capitalize and push forward off the big win, the Falcons prepared for senior night on Friday, May 20th at Bailey Field against the Lafayette Rams. The senior players included Gabe Brainard, Robert Cunningham, Ascencion Gomez IV, Joel Mahaffy, Abdulrahman Mohamad, Kylan Thongvathsa, and Justin Yi.
With only four games left before the end of the regular season before the regional playoffs, the Falcons prepared both mentally and physically. The season ended with a loss. The post-season continued with a game against Tabb, which the boys lost 5-3. The girls team won 8-1 against New Kent with goals scored by several girls, including Jenny Calderon (Jr.), Grace Cox (Sr.), and Alyssa Buludis (Sr.).
