New Horizons Offers Training Courses

Students at New Horizons, Woodside Lane campus believe that their access to trade and technical programs gives them better opportunities. Some students who have already taken classes at New Horizons think that it helped tremendously by providing technical or career certificates and training.

New Horizons is a school affiliated with York High School and many others. There are two different campuses: one in Hampton and the other in Newport News. There are many different classes students can take at New Horizons to help investigate career fields such as Culinary Arts, HVAC, EMT, Cosmetology, and Veterinary Science.

Zachary Roberts (Sr.) said, “I think that people who have no experience prior to the class gain skills that will bring opportunities for work to them as long as they perform well in their class.” Sarah Allen, a student in the Cosmetology program, practices skills learned in courses such as hair cutting and applying vibrant hair dyes. Others go to school for further guidance, and say that the class helped get them into schools with competitive programs by awarding credits or certificates while still in high school.

Others say that this school and the class they took helped them figure out that it wasn’t the career path that they wanted to pursue. Elle Cota (Sr.) said, “For me personally, I think it helped most with figuring out more with what I want to do in the future. I was always interested in vet science, and I still do, but I figured out that this wasn’t the path that I wanted to go down and it helped narrow it down for me.”

Students leave New Horizons with skills, certificates, and training. Students can enroll in the New Horizons program in their sophomore or junior year by submitting an application. Students can enroll in both A.M. and P.M. courses, offering flexibility to applicants.
