Girls and Boys Varsity Tennis Teams End Season

The girls and boys tennis teams at York High School have recently ended their 2022 season celebrating senior night earlier this month and competing in regionals the past week.


The girls team finished with a record of 5-5 wins and losses in its season. They had a recent 8-1 victory against Bruton High School for senior night. Rebecca Allen (Sr.), Chelsea Spivey (Jr.), Zhen Haskin (Sr.), Chahna Parikh (Sr.), Lucy Browning (Sr.), and Niya Patel (Sr.) competed for the top 6 singles and doubles matches for the girls’ team while the other team members competed in exhibition matches.


Browning said, “I love the close-knit family we have created these past few months. We all compliment each other very well so we can communicate effectively on the courts during matches and have lots of fun at team dinners after matches.”


The girls’ team went on to play in regionals this past week. On Tuesday, May 17th, they competed against Phoebus High School at York High School and won 5-0, allowing them to move forward with the regionals tournament. Their season came to an end when they lost 0-5 against New Kent High School on Thursday, May 19th in the semi-finals tournament for regionals.

As the girl’s team finished the season this past week, Elizabeth Walsh (Jr.) said, “Just being around this team is one of the best feelings ever. It’s always constant laughter and complete encouragement. Everyone is so genuine and that attitude is reflected in our playing.”

The boys’ team finished with a record of 3-7 wins and losses in their season. They had a recent loss against Lafayette High School for senior night. Alex Matthews (Sr.), Stephen Pegher (Sr.), Reese Zabler (So.), Austin Linsk (Fr.), Nick Valerio (Jr.), and Brooks Morgan (So.) competed for the top 6 singles and doubles matches for the boys’ team while the rest of the team played in exhibition matches.

The boys team went on to compete in regionals this past week. On Tuesday, May 17th, the boys competed against Phoebus High School at Briarfield Park and won, permitting them to move forward in the regionals tournament. Their season also came to a recent end on Thursday, May 19th with a loss against Lafayette High School in the semi-finals tournament for regionals.
