York’s Drama Department brought Firebringer to the stage for their spring show on April 20th, 21st, and 22nd. The story showcased a tribe of cave people witnessing what happens when people put their ideas together to make progress.
Kaylee MacLuskie (Jr.), who played Zazzalil, said, “it was the most wacky and fun show I have ever done, and the entire cast and crew were all so incredibly talented. As an actor, it was very liberating to improvise little moments that came to us spontaneously. Thanks to Mr. Leach and my dad, I’ve been able to re-watch and view photos of our performances. I’ve realized the production looked even better than it felt on the stage!”
The show showed the tribe’s discovery of fire, worshiping a duck, and even fighting a saber-tooth tiger named Snarl. The puppet Snarl was brought to life by 6 different members of the show’s crew: Liani Galindo (Sr.), Destiny Holsinger (Fr.), Lauren Hubof (So.), Raymond Dinger (So.), and Carley Westmoreland (Jr.) and Aidan Gregory (Jr.). As one of the puppeteers and Snarl’s voice, Gregory said, “it was tough to deal with, but I had fun with it. I enjoyed voice acting a lot.”
There were many cast members getting into their first musical this year, such as Jacob Burk (Fr.), who said, “my first show with y’all was amazing and a great experience. I would love to do it again. We did great, even after just 2 months of practice.”
Along with this show’s new drama members, the department also brought forward new ways to promote the production. On the Monday of show week, the cast performed “We Got Work to Do” for York’s faculty. They went on to sing a portion of the song on opening night as well over York’s morning announcements. Jocelyn Williams (Jr.), Firebringer’s stage manager, said, “it was a super fun way to promote our show, especially because we’d never done it before! The best part was getting to see everyone’s hard work pay off and getting to make memories with amazing people.”
On June 2nd, the Thespian Society will meet for an awards ceremony and the induction of new members. They will also have the opportunity to watch a few student-directed plays together. Through all the time spent working together to put on successful performances, the drama department continues to grow its community by bringing in new faces.
