York High School competition cheerleading team received second place at a district competition, had multiple all region and all state qualifiers, and continued to do skills the team has never done before. The team did all of this after not being able to have a team in the 2020-2021 season due to COVID-19.
The York High cheer team has never placed higher than third in competition.
This past year, the York High team placed second at a competition, beating Grafton High School and Tabb High School, two top competitors. Cheerleader on the team of two years Savana McLaughlin (Sr.) said, “After coming off the mat, I looked at my friends and knew we had hit one of our best routines yet. Later finding out we placed second in the competition was so amazing and an unforgettable moment.”
The team also had three All-Region qualifiers for the Bay Rivers Region including Cejae Farris (Sr.), Kaydence Washington (So.), and Lauren Sechriest (Sr.). Lauren Sechriest also continued to qualify for the All-State team. Washington said, “My first year on the team was unbelievable and one that I’ll never forget. It was an honor to qualify for all-region with such an amazing group of girls.”
The 2021-2022 season was one to remember for the competition cheerleading team, who pushed through the season with a new coach Porsha Valliant.
