The color guard of the York High School band helped propel the marching band to victory this past year. In the band’s four competitions spanning October and November of 2021, the York High Color Guard won first place in its class three times, and the Marching Band was named Grand Champion in the latter two. As marching band was canceled during the 2020-2021 school year, only 3 of the 13 students in the color guard were returning members.
“Watching newbies grow everyday,” said Grace Law (Sr.), “was the most memorable part.” Law was the captain of the guard this past season and plans to continue the activity at James Madison University this coming fall.
The color guard planned to compete in the winter as well, but winter guard was canceled due to a COVID-19 surge in cases. “I’ve always really respected the color guard,” said Amanda Leach (Sr.), who played saxophone in the fall. Leach continued, “I was disappointed that we went through the audition process and then never actually did anything with it, especially since I spent so much time practicing.” To continue her education, Leach will be studying at George Mason University, and is planning to join their marching band.
This coming year, the band plans to compete and travel in a more challenging circuit. The York High Color Guard will be holding tryouts for next season on May 23rd through the 27th for new and returning members. Those interested should see the Band Director, Richard Purvis, or Grace Law for more details. No prior experience is required.
