The class of 2023 held its Ring Dance on March 12th, 2022, at the Fort Eustis Officers Club. Ring Dance is a York High School tradition for the juniors in celebration of receiving their class rings.
After Covid disrupted Ring Dance for the previous junior class, this year’s officers were elated to be given the opportunity to hold ring dance. This is the first year sponsors have moved up with a class, so Spanish teacher Ana Proctor and the junior officers planned the dance. The junior class sponsor from the previous year, chemistry teacher Deb Eckstein, usually works with the juniors.
Class President Casey Tingen (Jr.) said, “Though putting on the dance was stressful, I was overall very happy with the turn out and thought everyone had a great time.”
The class officers selected the theme of the dance to be “Under the Stars.” To encapsulate this theme, the venue had decorations of sparkly stars, twinkle lights, and silver and blue balloons. Allie Poteat (Jr.) said, “I loved having the dance at the Officers’ Club; it was the perfect size, the food was great, and SCA did a great job decorating it.”
Vice president Savannah Payne decorated for the dance.
Ring Dance did stray away from tradition this year, as it was the first time there was not a crowned ring dance queen and king. Abby Speth (Jr.) said, “I think not having a king and queen was a good decision because the winners would have been predictable, and the experience of the dance is more important than crowning a couple.” The juniors’ officers agreed the voting and crowning was outdated. Prom preparation is underway. Tingen stated, “Having this experience planning ring dance will definitely be a great aid in planning the best prom next year.”
