Science teacher Amber Lamonte and her AP Environmental Science class went on a field trip to the HRSD York River Treatment Plant on April 27. The class had been studying wastewater treatment in a previous unit and decided to visit a treatment plant for a new learning experience.
Students were given hard hats to wear when touring the facility. They learned how wastewater was treated to become clean, potable, usable water.
Junior Eliza Jones said, “My favorite part about the trip was being able to actually see how the water was cleaned rather than learning it on paper. Being able to experience it and watch it happen was very interesting.”
After making a quick stop at Wendy’s, the group then headed to Yorktown Beach. They picked up litter at the beach and collected samples of the river water. They used these samples to test the water quality. They did this through the Smithsonian’s “Chesapeake Water Watch” program.
Lamonte said the field trip was “an opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of clean water and blue-collar jobs.”
The water samples from the river showed the water’s rate of photosynthesis from sea grass.
